Covid Response

Resilience in the Face of Crisis

Launched in September 2019, Buttonup quickly faced the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the world, including Egypt, grappled with a severe shortage of medical supplies—particularly protective gowns—Buttonup took decisive action. We established a production line dedicated to crafting protective medical gowns, all designed and made by women in our workshop in Old Cairo.

This initiative not only addressed the critical need for medical supplies but also empowered economically vulnerable women by providing them with stable employment during a global crisis. In 2020, Buttonup redirected all its resources to this cause, successfully producing and delivering over 10,000 gowns to isolation hospitals across Egypt.

Our approach was multifaceted: we created a vital production line for protective medical apparel while strengthening local communities by involving them in innovative solutions to urgent national challenges. This successful pivot not only ensured the supply of essential medical equipment but also highlighted the significant role that women in local communities can play in overcoming such challenges.

Inspired by this success, Buttonup has since evolved to focus on empowering women and youth in local communities, enabling them to develop locally-driven solutions to Egypt’s most pressing issues. Today, we are committed to contributing to climate solutions through the creation of eco-friendly products, all crafted in the heart of our local communities.

Queen Camilla’s Visit to Buttonup

350 kilometers from the heart of the capital, we are working through our new workshop in the Red Sea with Kuwait Energy to empower women in the Governorate. The project targets primarily women with low income in Ras Ghareb, particularly at a time when a huge global economic crisis is unfolding to help them overcome the deteriorating situation which reflects negatively on their social situations and their children’s education. Buttonup and Kuwait Energy Egypt are launching this project under the name Tamkeny which represents the first step toward economically empowering women in Ras Ghareb through vocational and business trainings.

Ahead of COP 27 and in light of the strategic cooperation between Emirates NBD –Egypt and ButtonUp, Taproot was launched to provide locally-born solutions to mitigate climate change risks and support local communities’ environmental, social, and economic resilience by providing training on environmentally friendly industries to women and youth in Izzbet Khairallah. The project contributes to the capacity building of more than 180 women and youth from Izzbet Kahirallah, empowering them to produce and market high-quality, environmentally friendly products.

The British Council is working with partners worldwide to support the success and legacy of COP26, creating opportunities for cooperation, dialogue, and action in arts, education, and science that address the shared challenges of climate change.
Buttonup is taking part in this initiative to support the local community at Izzbet Khairallah in creating innovative solutions to adapt and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
The first phase will promote the culture of recycling and using non-plastic alternatives in the community through training youth on manufacturing such products, then how to establish their projects to sustain their work and promote these products on a large scale.

Through this project, Emirates NBD-Egypt and Buttonup aim to create career opportunities for women in Izzbet Khairallah, By equipping them with needed skills and appropriate marketing techniques.
The trainees received intense workshop training courses on sewing, enabling them to produce different textile products and business management. The project also targets spreading awareness on issues such as gender equality to familiarize them with their rights as women
